Vilas County is a popular vacation destination in Wisconsin. There are extensive tracts of federal, state, and county forestlands, 60 recognized trails, 73 rivers and streams, and over 1,300 lakes in this magnificent region of the Northwoods. The lakes of Vilas County are notable for their clarity, beauty, and accessibility. These crystal-clear waterways are known for providing excellent fishing, paddling/boating, and swimming options. Vilas County's ponds and lakes offer abundant walleye, musky, northern pike, panfish, and bass, from small, shimmering ponds in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest to large bodies of water like 3,800-acre Trout Lake, the Eagle River Chain, the Manitowish Waters Chain, the Lac du Flambeau Chain, or the Cisco Chain.

Do you like golf or museums? Vilas County is home to nine 18-hole golf courses with fantastic views and great play, as well as 14 community historical museums.
Bikers can choose from a variety of trails, ranging from paved to difficult mountain biking terrain. Hikers can pick from more than 40 trails, some of which are interpretive.
Vilas County has a lot of fun in the winter. More than 700 miles of expertly maintained routes are available to snowmobilers. Cross-country skiers can choose from dozens of paths, while snowshoers can explore a variety of trails as well as the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest, which spans 232,000 acres. Many of the 1300 lakes that are fished throughout the summer become fantastic ice fishing places once frozen!
